Tried Elementary and Manjaro. I can definitely see myself leaving macOS and moving on to a Linux distro on permanent basis.

@chaitanya Yeah. I would live comfortably on the Linux side, except for a few apps that have no equivalent over there. And, same as you, the Adobe thing.
@maique I am questioning myself now, what do I really need and what is just extra when in use? Ufff my brain would overload before I sleep.
@chaitanya For me there’s not a lot missing, but i really really love some of the ones that aren’t available. Apart from the whole Apple thing, that is, mails and calendar and photos and whatnot.
@maique This made me just realise what am I gonna do with my iPad if I move away from macOS. Together they have been so perfect!
@chaitanya Yeah. That’s a big thing. I do love trying things out, and learning about Linux and other stuff but, in the end, the Mac ecosystem works really well for me, and has for a long time.
@chaitanya I agree with @maique. Apple ecosystem is great, specially when you have an iPad, iPhone and iWatch. I love Linux but I run it for educational purposes, i.e., trying to learn command line and other hardcore stuff.
@maique @paulopinto I guess I got a bit carried away, it is just so exciting. I did realise I can't replace my macOS anytime soon till this is my only laptop. But I would surely continue trying them all out as live-systems. I did end up installing LineageOS on my phone though and looks good so far.
@chaitanya I started like that. Then ended up installing on that spare SSD, and visited more often. After a while, when I didn’t need Adobe or something like that, I’d end up spending a couple of days there. If you find a distro you enjoy, and spend some time using it, it’ll get easier and easier to actually do stuff and figure it out.
@chaitanya Sure is! When you boot from your live USB stick, you can decide if you want to keep running the live version, or install on a drive. Get the external drive plugged in on another port, and pick that as install destination. Then, whenever it’s plugged in, and you restart holding the key, you’ll chose which system you’d like to boot: macOS, or the Linux one. And it will be able to use it as a regular install. You don’t lose your stuff every time you reboot.
@maique I did it! I installed ElementaryOS on the external drive and I am using it now for all daily non-work purposes. Thank you!
@chaitanya Great news, glad you made it! Elementary is a great pick too, it’s really polished and doesn’t look too different, a very nice one to start exploring this new world. Congrats and have fun!
