New web feature that @vincent has been working on, via the news blog:

Hover the mouse over someone’s profile photo to get a quick look at their full name, bio, web site, and link to follow them.

This is especially useful in Discover if you want to quickly follow someone new.

@manton This is very cool. Once again y'all are taking the best of social media while avoiding the worst.

@manton cool. The first thing I tried was a long press on profile photo in mobile app. A pop up there would be cool.

@JoeCotellese Thanks! Yeah, we'll have to think about the best way to handle this on mobile.

@manton @vincent Oh that's clever. I can't believe such a dangerous feature made it past App Review.

@manton For those testing this feature on this conversation thread... feel free to hover and follow! :-)

@cdevroe @manton Speaking of which: a similar thing on the Conversation link would be enormously useful! Then we could take a quick glance at the conversation without actually needing to click the link.

@Mandalorian @vincent What browser are you using? The transparency looks good here, but maybe a personal preference... We're working on making it faster too and already rolled out one change that should help. We'll probably tweak a little after it gets some more use.

@Mandalorian Ah ha! This looks like a Firefox issue because it's missing the background blur. It's much more readable in Safari/Chrome. This is something we can work on, thanks.

@Mandalorian It's not that transparent at my end (Safari). It's more like transclucent (frosted glass) and looks nice.

@manton @Mandalorian FWIW I'm getting the blur in Firefox...103. πŸ˜† (I thought for sure it had looked worse this morning, than it did this afternoon...!)

@manton dissenting opinion: this is an impressive flex but unnecesary departure from minimalist / slow social-media.
A balancing feature could be to allow Follow only Article length posts (or at least filter Timeline for that). Would make a high-follow-count Timeline slightly more digestible. Til then I'll keep just commenting on Discover.

@manton Thank you, and thank you @vincent. Working great in Safari. Mobile would be great, but turned on the laptop just to check this, and it looks really cool.

@Mandalorian BTW... have you tried using the latest version of Firefox? I mean I am only a dev... but it's working here in 103 now 🀣 cc/ @manton - I actually just opened a PR for this too. Funny.

@Mandalorian There was a long open issue with Firefox to enable it by default since they added support (behind feature flags) in verion 70 (or 73) onwards. They were waiting for WebRender (or something like this) to catch up with different machine configs and anti-aliasing. So I guess 103 is the one!

@manton I like the idea of this window but I see it opening on itself even if I just scroll through a converation without mousing over anyone's name or photo. The mouse is just over their comment. This is happening in the latest Edge and Safari.

@jameskoole @manton checked a bit more. It's isolated to the Converation view and seems to happen because the div with the user_name takes up the entire column and the window activation is tied to it, not the < a> link.
