Day 2 of microblogging. Next step, figure out how to connect this to jimdab.com, my “real” blog that I almost never use.

@jimdab Hey! What are you using for your "real" blog? Do you need to keep them separate or could you merge them? Or do you just want links to your posts there to come over here? 🙃

@jimdab pipe in the RSS feed from that blog...not at that it matters really, your Micro.blog will hopefully be your only place on the web and then syndicate that feed outwards. You should definitely make the plunge. Its liberating.

@jimdab What platform is your other blog? I'm currently in the process of looking at ways to integrate microblogging with WordPress. I have a few ideas that are bound to keep me busy over the weekend.

@SteveSawczyn Hey Steve, my other “real” blog is at jimdab.com. I have my own domain hosted on github and built with Jekyll. I’ve tried several kinds over the years and tend not to be happy with any of them. I’m a very slow-motion tinkerer.

@kaa Well that’s an interesting suggestion as well. Can we go both directions? Posts to micro.blog end up on my site and posts to my site end up here? FYI, my other site is simply at jimdab.com.

@rosemaryorchard Hey Rosemary, thanks for reaching out. My other site is at jimdab.com - I have my own domain hosted by github and I use Jekyll to manage the blog. TBH, I’m not sure what I want to do. I’m mostly just poking about capabilities and it seemed like linking the two might be useful.

@jimdab You can yes. How easy depends on your site back end. So for example I post on my Micro.blog site, and it ends up on my Wordpress.com and Tumblr sites. I used to send it to my Twitter account as well, but I’ve decided against that. You can send your posts from your Micro.blog account directly or use something like IFTTT (which I use).

@kaa Why do you use IFTTT for Tumblr syndication rather than the native micro.blog?

@MitchWagner So I noticed an error in the way Micro.blog was publishing to tumblr (for some reason the full HTML is published). IFTTT doesn’t do that, and I’d bothered Manton enough last week that I thought I’d just deal with it myself.

@kaa That is odd. I’ve been publishing to Tumblr with micro.blog for months and have not noted a problem. You said publishing the full HTML is a problem — why is that?

I noticed with IFTTT there were some problems publishing images to Tumblr. Native micro.blog doesn’t have that problem.

@MitchWagner Hhmm, seems to work perfectly for me. Everything is replicated. The best way to see the issue that native Micro.blog posting was having is on something like this post: kaa-pow.tumblr.com/post/6177...

No idea if it’s my theme that is causing the problem, or something that needs to be tweaked on the Micro.blog side? @manton has anyone else run into something like this?

@kaa @MitchWagner Yes, I've heard that reported before but it never happens for me, so I'm really confused. I have no idea what is causing it.

@kaa I’ve had that happen occasionally but can’t remember when or why.... pretty sure micro.blog syndication to tumblr has been flawless for me. Not challenging your experience though!

Is your blog hosted on micro.blog or elsewhere?

@kaa The problem posting photos through IFTTT is only an issue when viewing my tumblr in the tumblr stream. When viewing mitchwagner.tumblr.com, everything looks fine.

There are two reasons I’m still on Tumblr: Because it’s zero effort for me to syndicate there. Set and forget. And because ONE FRIEND reads me on Tumblr. I mean, other people do too but this one friend is the only person I care about!

That’s not true. There is a third reason, which is I’m hopeful that Auttomatic will do something to make Tumblr interesting again.

@MitchWagner Huh, you’re correct, it doesn’t work on there either....that is weird. I might take a look into that to see what I could be doing that...maybe it’s because the tumblr I am syndicating to isn’t my primary site? Just really weird.

I’m reposting there for the same reason, although I have to say that I am reconsidering based on the fact that this is not really what Tumblr is good for. Tumblr is all about finding stuff, reposting and sharing...and it’s mainly a visual place (at least that is what has worked for me in the past. The stuff that I post on my Micro.blog doesn’t really belong there.

@kaa I think the problem with syndicating using IFTTT is because the images stay on micro.blog, and tumblr flags them as external images. Users have to click on the image to see it. That’s not a problem using micro.blog syndication. But of course you are having other problems with that.

I agree with you about appropriateness of micro.blog content. On the other hand, a few people seem to like my content there. If the hassle of posting to tumblr from micro.blog exceeds the benefit, I’ll consider next steps. But for now the hassle is negligible.
