I am thinking about buying a Kindle to use instead of the iPad for reading at night to avoid light exposure before going to bed. What’s kept me away until now is that I trust Apple more than Amazon with my data, but maybe in this case my health should get priority over my principles.

@jeroensangers There are other e-readers out there. I have a Tolino Shine 3 (basically a Kobo Clara HD) and am mostly happy. Only thing I dislike is having a touchscreen instead of physical button, especially for turning pages.

@jeroensangers Unless you're avoiding Amazon entirely (insofar as that's even possible today) and getting your ebooks from Project Guttenburg or such, I don't think Amazon can learn much from a device that doesn't even have your personal data on it. I'd be more concerned about the Kindle App on my iPad Mini, which device does have personal stuff galore.

@jl_siewert What makes the iPad and Kindle attractive for me is the integrated book store. I don’t want to have to search and download books and transfer them to my device.

I don’t know the Tolino device you mention, but assume it has no integrated book store.

@ReaderJohn I hardly ever use Amazon.

I don’t think there is a big difference in data collection between the Kindle device and the Kindle app, since on iOS the apps are pretty well sandboxed.
