Olden Days: Gasoline was like 0.29 cents a gallon. They pumped the gas for you, washed your windshield, checked your oil and gave you free road maps. Today, gas is near $4 a gallon, no maps and you do all the work. We’re a bunch of suckers.

@bradenslen we had to also sit at the back of the bus so I guess I’ll pay more for the gas 😊

@bradenslen I remember wondering if I would have to wear a tie if I worked for Texaco during the summer in high school. I wanted to get one of those stars to wear because "you can trust your car with the man who wears the star."

@topgold Ya, I remember the uniforms gas station workers wore. In the old photos, just after World War II, they even wore military/police type visored hats! Must have been surplus from the war. Those later gave way to baseball caps.

@bradenslen Maybe it’s inside baseball that ruined it? No, being serious now: my guess it’s about security and money. They need to be behind the counter, for their own, and their money’s security. Also, they know that if you need gas - you need gas, independent from the service level.

@bradenslen Come to New Jersey. You will still see full service gas uniforms.

@jgmac1106 That's right! You can't pump your own gas in NJ.
