I am in the market for a new reading device: I have bad eyes, I have a whole heap of digital books (PDF mostly), my 2nd generation kindle has been dead for about a year, and the family iPad is monopolized by other family members. I'm ideally looking for something portable, relatively li... eli.li

@eli latest kindle paperwhite is simply the best reading device out there. Might not check off the android test device bucket, but it’s a true pleasure to read on.

@eli The Amazon Fire tablets have a pretty good price. I have a smaller one and in some ways I like it better than my Kindle. The larger ones might be good.

@eli I have the Kobo Auro One and love it. Supports PDF's bigger screen than any other eReaders on the market, not Amazon, not perfect but scratches my itch well. I love reading on it.

@eli I think it's tough to beat the latest Paperwhite. I have the 2nd-gen Oasis but I'm not convinced it's worth the premium.

@eli I just bought a Kindle a week ago for reading. I wanted a dedicated reading device for “regular books” that was not my iPad and e-ink. I looked at both the newest Kindle Paper White and the Kindle Oasis. I ended up going with the Oasis for a couple reason:

  1. Physical quality of device in the hand. Aluminum vs. Plastic.
  2. Physical page turn buttons. (Didn’t seem like a big deal, but it was to me in practice).
  3. Larger screen.
  4. Backlighting. 5 led vs. 12 led + adaptive light sensor.

Only downside I could see was the price tag of the Oasis being quite a bit higher than the Paper White. In the end the added $$ felt worth it to me.

@Burk @eli The physical page turn buttons are a must-have for me, which is why I went with the Oasis. I lot of people don't seem to care as much.

@eli Another vote for a Paperwhite. But the keyboard is horrible, so if you like to highlight and make notes, get a stylus too.

@agundy thanks! I think this may be my ticket. The Amazon hardware looks nice, but I'd rather not lock into that ecosystem right now.

@eli The Kobo is nice enough, especially when trying to avoid Amazon. I also hear it works very well with the library rental apps, although I've not tried it on mine.

@eli let me know if it goes well :) I endorse breaking out of the Amazon chamber and the screen size and the night red mode are better than Kindle too.
