I’m going to go out on a limb here and say something that may not be popular: I think I may like Matter better than Readwise’s new very full-featured Reader app. Change my mind.

@frostedechoes good for you because I'm still waiting to be onboard of the beta cycle here!

@numericcitizen They are opening up the beta to a broader group now that you don't have to be onboarded, so you should see some action soon.

@frostedechoes oh, cool. Can't wait for that one! From a Matter user.

@frostedechoes Do you know if there was a link to sign up to be added to the beta? I logged into Matter, so maybe I’m already on it, but I’m assuming there’d be a TestFlight version?

@frostedechoes disregard! Looks like I am in it. Maybe?

@frostedechoes Interesting, as despite trying Matter more than once it never stuck for me. What draws you to it over Readwise?

@sarcassem Sorry, to be clear, I was referring to the newly public Readwise Reader beta.

@pimoore A few things.

I have a Kobo, but the Kindle push in Matter could win me over to that platform.

Matter allows you to take notes on a quote or the whole article. I haven't found a way to make notes in Reader.

Also, Reader is just too much. It tries to be a bit of everything. I like the more minimal approach of Matter.

@frostedechoes Is Matter free? How do they make money?

@KyleEssary Yep, and that's what keeps some people from checking it out. They don't have a transparent business model. I'm guessing they will just start charging at some point.

@frostedechoes @kyleessary Matter’s lack of a clear business model also made me shy away from using it too. They really need to have a plan to keep the platform profitable, otherwise it’s only a matter of time. I will say it was a clean and simple app to use, and the typography and readability was well done.

@numericcitizen I’ve been using the Readwise Reader Beta, and it keeps improving. One of my favorite features is that you can now subscribe to your Twitter lists and receive a digest of your tweets twice a day.

Readwise also makes money, so I’m more comfortable with them long term.

@frostedechoes I’ve not tried Readwise — I thought it was aimed at a slightly different use case — but, I can say that I’ve been increasingly impressed with Matter: clean and considered; I admire that they had the spine to strip out the ill-advised “social” aspect they launched with. Still room for improvement, but it’s replaced my paid Instapaper Pro sub.

@ericgregorich Can't wait to try it out!
