Squirrel wars escalating. I am injured but I persist.

@ayjay Good luck! I've also recently managed to befriend the birds with a feeder (that's supposedly squirrel-proof), and now I watch it like— well, like a hawk.

(Sorry to hear about the injury! I hope you get some relief soon.)

@jaheppler @ayjay Although I’m a bird lover, the squirrels are also my friends. Wish they didn’t have to compete for food. Hope you mend soon, @ayjay! 🐿

@odd I will admit that I think of squirrels as small furry demons. That said, I won't do worse than point a squirtgun at them, and I keep the birdbath -- which they use more that the birds do -- filled with fresh water for tham to drink. They probably think of me as their most fun friend.

@ayjay I would tell you about the great squirrel-proof feeder I bought, but you’re having way more fun with it this way.

@ayjay That’s not the worst kind of relationship! Some call them fuzzy tailed rats, but I don’t think that’s completely fair.

@dwalbert I have one, and it works! But the problem is that the birds don't like any of the food that goes in it as much as they like suet. (I've tried everything.) So they ignore the squirrel-proof feeder and go for the suet, which has hot pepper in it to make it hateful to squirrels. But the squirrels eat the hot stuff anyway. I can't win.

@ayjay I had to stop hanging suet because the raccoons took it down and dragged if off into the woods. Before that I had the same experience as you. I figured the squirrels were all Cajun…

@ayjay Are you willing to consider measures that are, uh, more permanent than a water gun? If so, I have an option for you to consider that has worked well for me.

(I am not referring to firearms, even though you live in Texas.)

@lmullen I have done trap and release in the past, if that's what you mean, but my wife has refused to allow it this time. She's far too sentimental about our common enemy.

@ayjay I'm very fond of squirrels, but still willing to be your friend. We have the standard grey squirrels, also the fierce little red squirrels, as well as chipmunks of course. I enjoy them all. When they look at me, they always seem to have a censorious expression, as if they've sized me up and found me wanting.
