@patrickrhone I'd love to be able to message people individually on micro.blog and think it could be built smoothly into the app. How about if posts beginning with @ only appeared on @name's time-line? Thoughts, @jean?
@patrickrhone This is a cool idea. And building different features with different tools (instead of as a monolithic silo) is very IndieWeb. š¤
(Though I suppose the really IndieWeb solution would be us all running our own XMPP servers... š)
@JMaxB I defer to @manton. š
I like the idea of being able to message folks, but since Micro.blog is built on public blog posts, so we canāt offer private messaging without a major retooling of our capabilities in several aspects.
@jean FWIW, thatās why I floated this idea out as āunofficialā.
More of a āpeople like us use things like thisā agreement between users. Organically started and grown like hashtags.
@patrickrhone I like this idea. Iām going to sign up for Signal and try it out. I donāt use Whatās App or FB, but I can see this would be a cool use.
@jthingelstad not sure whether itās such a good idea to have our phone numbers posted on our site like that though. Even an email address attract spammers.
@patrickrhone INTERESTING! Never used signal but I'm open to the idea. I've struck up a couple of iMessage conversations with people from here but that is annoyingly Apple only.
@vishae Telegram has a nice way of handling this. You get a t.me/username URL you can share, and no one has access to your phone number.
@patrickrhone @vishae Update: read the support pages and thereās a new group feature where you get a link (or QR Code) for the group. Sharing that would give a way for people to join that group. Maybe thatās a way to get everyone on board without sharing phone numbers publicly.
@maique that would be good, and i guess once on the group chat, itād be easier to arrange DMs if needed.
@vishae Made this on a rush, I'm leaving soon and will be back in a few hours. Feel free to join, I'll add everyone as admin as soon as I can.
@patrickrhone Made a group, shared it on a reply. Hope itās ok. @cm @ChrisJWilson @rom @jean @jthingelstad @rnv @Cheri @danj @JMaxB
@maique How do we connect up? Donāt we need to have each otherās phone numbers? (Mine: US 612-616-8633)
@patrickrhone Iām always amazed by Amazonās logic: If you like Orchestre Poly-Rythmo de Cotonou, maybe youāll like āOLW Cheese Doodlesā?
@odd I'm finding Apple's recommendations to be far more accurate. That said, they have much deeper info about my listening habits through 20 years of iTunes use.
@vishae There was a need, and I had spare time and also wanted to try this out. Iām the one thanking you for the idea.
@patrickrhone Yes, they are pretty good, although I use Spotify for music now. I like how much better the predictive text on iPhones has become lately. It makes it a lot easier for me to type in English.
@patrickrhone unlike @Cheri, Iāve had Signal for a long time and like it, but not a lot of my friends use it. I like your idea.
@maique I just realised a solution to the ānot wanting to share our phone number for Signalā problem. You created a micro.blog group and shared the group link, but technically we can each create our own āWelcomeā group, and post that link on our individual āContact meā page. We can even set the groupās membership to āapproval requiredā to filter out spammers. Once someone has āmade contactā you can even delete them out of the welcome group.
