I’ve spent the day with some smart MSU folks thinking about our Digital Presence and Public Scholarship Initiative and the ways it might help encourage more process-focused, publicly engaged, dialogic scholarly work: the core of the land-grant mission for the 21st century.

@kfitz This is terrific. Innocent (not so innocent) question: could this same service also offer students their own social media channel? Or is it purely “scholarly”?

@dancohen It could, absolutely. We’re using Domains via Reclaim, and that student use is their original orientation. We intentionally decided to focus our efforts on faculty and grad students, though, in order to provide ground for rethinking research cultures here.

@dancohen Supporting undergrads would raise some budgetary considerations, as well as support challenges for our very small team. (Key to our program is a fellows program and other hands-on support.) But with appropriate resources, it could absolutely be done.

@kfitz Gotcha. Thanks. This higher touch for scholarly uses makes a lot of sense.

@dancohen @dancohen rolling out my first class with grads in a few days. Trying #IndieWeb WordPress. Have had great conversations with @manton about how micro.blog could be used.
