As far as I could tell, the auto-pause feature pauses the workout when it thinks you’re stopped. In my case the tattoos on my wrist trick the watch, it thinks I have removed it, and pauses the workout.

Dark inks prevent the light sensors on the back from working properly, the watch thinks it’s not on the wrist.
\n\nI do think that, since so many people have tattoos by now, they could have found a way to make it easier for us. All I really needed was for the workout to stop pausing, and allow me to tell the watch when I’m done! Not that hard, I think.
