This classic article on source lists from 2005 by Sven-S. Porst is a good reminder that Mac UI has gotten more self-consistent since those days.

Personally I think it sucks as Mail’s drawer was brilliant. Not taking up space on your screen when you didn’t need it but quickly available when you wanted to file things.
reminded me why I mourned the drawer's demise. It was used in a lot of places that were a bad fit (but had no better alternative at the time), but afterwards, we got stuck with source lists in a lot of places where they were a bad fit, permanently taking up screen space.
