@bradenslen By "no incoming webmentions" do you mean that people without a Micro.blog account can't comment on your posts? If so, support for that was added, at least that's what I understand it to be since it's for IndieWeb-friendly custom domains. Or is there more to it than that with the webmention support you need?

@simonwoods also @gwg noted copmpatibility of post kinds with 5.0 but not Gutenberg...let's wait and see.....

I pulled the rip cord on WordPress as well. Hoping to hange here some more...

@simonwoods On Wordpress, if somebody mentions my post, or replies to it from another blog, that reply or mention appears right on the post page on my blog. That. My replies to comments also appear on the post page of my blog. It preserves the whole threaded conversation.

Just putting it in a fleeting timeline isn't enough. It needs to be preserved on the blog.

@simonwoods Sorry I wasn't clear before. It's hard to explain Indieweb stuff because it's different on each platform.

@bradenslen No worries! I'm pretty sure comments being part of blog posts is due to happen sooner rather than later, since the update I mentioned very much appears to be the first step on the path to that particular change.

@bradenslen no possibility of displaying webmention was one reason am still away from M.b as my primary blog.

Btw I do not see Blot in your options? I understand I does not have a first party cms, but one can enable micropub and use any web/native client.

@amit In re. Blot: I've been half following the Blot conversations here on Micro.blog, but the problem is I don't understand Blot. I'm embarassed to say that. Oh I can describe it in a passing conversation but I really don't undersatnd how it all comes together to work. To be fair I really have not investigated it either.

I did list it in Indieweb.xyz along with your Indieweb extension because I can see the usefulness of it for others if they can figure it all out.

@jgmac1106 I noticed that Post Kinds doesn't display the metaboxes when Gutenberg is active (at least not now). Hopefully, Post Kinds will be updated for WP 5.0 and Gutenberg.

For now, though, Webmentions are working for me.

@pauljacobson aren't youy on wordpress.com but with all the plugins? is that the same as wordpress.org with all the plugins...yeah post-kinds doesn't work with Gutenberg just 5.0...not sure what will happen...or if it can be done...looking into ClassicPress fork to see if we can get native microformats support.

We just don't know how to do what we do without custom fields, widgets, etc.

Plus all the php developers (two) freaking bc they don't know React and don't thinl thye have the skills to update.

@jgmac1106 Hey

aren't youy on wordpress.com but with all the plugins?

No, my blog is self-hosted, although I'm still on 4.9.8 because my host is holding back on the 5.0 update till January.

is that the same as wordpress.org with all the plugins

Pretty much, yes.

@amit I have a better answer for you about Blot. I took the time this morning to read look at the website and watch the well done video.

I'm impressed with Blot. There are lots of things I really like: accepts txt and html files which are about as long term archival as we have on computers, each post can exist in 3 places (your harddrive, Dropbox, Blot's servers) at one time which is a defacto backup system. Even the supplied templates are good.

Also, I see your Blotpub extension would allow me to use Quill which would better fit my working preferences.

Things that won't make it work for me: 1. Disqus support is better than nothing for comments but it is surrendering comments to a third party silo. Maybe I missed something on comments? 2. Indieweb, it's not a deal breaker if there are other shiney things to compensate like TikiWiki has, but it is a factor. Again maybe I missed something?

I do think it is a pretty neat blog platform.

@pauljacobson Yeah I always go back and forth since I start students on wordpress.com but they could never afford the levels of plugins necessary so then it's back to should I introduce shared hosts....

What theme are you using? You don't run into any mf2 issues?

Yup, this is a challenge. If it's for a short duration, it's probably more cost effective to set up sites with a host like Bluehost where the monthly subs are pretty low.

What theme are you using?

I'm currently using Independent Publisher 2. It doesn't support all the IndieWeb I'd like to reflect on the site, but I like the overall theme. Twenty Sixteen is pretty popular because it supports more of the IndieWeb stuff, but I prefer my current layout.

You don't run into any mf2 issues?

I don't think so. Then again, it's possible I haven't configured some of that correctly.

@bradenslen I've found it to be the absolute best, if the intention is to write and then edit long form writing. Quick items are ok, but where Blot shines is definitely for the larger forms of writing. Guttenburg my ass.

@pauljacobson ahhh bunch of us going to try and update Indpendent Publisher after December...not the Wordpress.com one but Independent Publisher that was compliant....has a few little issues to tweak...should work for those on IP2 who stick to Classic Editor, until we know effect of Gutenberg

Everyone watching keynote getting quite scared about all the javascript front-end talk...experimenting with metadata and writng blocks has not gone well at all.

@kaa This is really good to know. Thanks for the information.

There are always, at least, two factors in my head about blog platforms: 1. how is it as a blog, 2. how will it work with blog-as-social-network? That's where my concerns about comment support come in.

@bradenslen As a blog engine, it's easily my favourite. As a blog-as-social-network, it doesn't hold a candle to Micro.blog, which is why I use both but in different ways...the right tool for the right job and all that.

@jgmac1106 I think there's a lot of potential for Reader to be that connector that blogs are missing to a degree. I'd like to see that sort of social fabric woven into blogging services by default, but it's a step in the right direction.

@jgmac1106 I took a look at Independent Publisher 1, and I prefer v2. That said, v2 is only available on WordPress.com (I think), so that's a pity!

Everyone watching keynote getting quite scared about all the javascript front-end talk...experimenting with metadata and writng blocks has not gone well at all.

I'm not a developer (more of a coder/tinkerer), and when I delved into React, I could see how powerful it is. That said, it's pretty intimidating to me with my minimal JavaScript knowledge.

At the same time, perhaps this is just some growing pains as WordPress becomes a more powerful, extensible, and flexible platform?

@pauljacobson yes good to know, technically that plugin works 95% of the way and you are close enough.

Microformats is not going to happen in core. They are or did pull all microformats in favor of JSON-LD because that is what Yost and Google want not what the web needs.

General consensus Metadata properties should stay out of classes bc theme and plugin delivers screw up and style or delete them.
