A couple of mornings ago I was making breakfast when I noticed the top half of the quail run door was open. I rushed out to check on the two girls, who fortunately were sitting happily minding their own business. I must have left the door open the previous afternoon! 🐦

Quail run with open door. White quail sitting calmly on straw. Stripy quail, with slightly out of focus face, standing on straw.

@Miraz Then there are no foxes around. 🦊 Good thing you noticed anyway because cats are maybe in the area.

@odd Yes, no foxes in Aotearoa New Zealand. The most likely predators would have been cats, rats or stoats.

@crossingthethreshold I'll say! I was also very relieved they hadn't flown out as then they would have been gone forever.

@Miraz You must be making them feel very comfortable, a comfort that they won’t they know they won’t be able to find anywhere else - or am I giving quail’s too much credit for their intelligence?

@crossingthethreshold I guess they weren't motivated to fly off. They don't really fly, even in the open — if startled they'll lift off vertically and fly a very short distance. I guess nothing startled them. 😀

@Miraz aren't they beautiful! I've kept chickens, but never quails.
