I came to know that “how Disney ruined star wars” is one of the most searched questions around Disney. I wonder, have they? What about Marvel? They have done something – but ruined, it is not.

@amit oooh! I wrote a blog post that is tangentially about this.

The Disney stuff is fun, but, I think it is missing a key element that Lucas’ Star Wars always had in spades — blank space.

Lucas’ Star Wars is so full of blank spaces that a whole universe was able to grow into the gaps. The more that Lucas added to Star Wars, the more blank space there was. This is in juxtaposition to Disney’s Star Wars where the goal seems to be to fill every available blank space possible with moar content!

@amit I don't know that there's an objective answer to this question. People seem to enjoy Star Wars for a variety of reasons, so I imagine the people who think Disney ruined it are finding that the elements they enjoy are taking a backseat to other elements.

@eli Possibly. It's fun, but is missing what made the originals great - a pretty common complaint that I have read. Still "ruined it" is a pretty strong negative 👍🏽

@KimberlyHirsh Yeah, that's what I think. There is no satisfying every fan.

@amit in addition to what @eli and @KimberlyHirsh said, there’s also a vocal minority who think Disney adding more diversity (non-white + women) in lead roles is “ruining Star Wars”. Even Reva, a black woman in Obi-Wan got a ton of hate mail.

@pratik @amit I suspect this is what most people who say "ruined" mean.

@pratik The original Star Wars was literally based on intermingling between different species, so why can’t they stomach different colors of skin / sexes? They’re probably not Trekkies either then. I admit I have a problem with a figure in SW too, Jar-Jar, but that’s because he literally is based on Goofy.

@odd Don't get me started on Trekkies complaining about new shows. It's like they watched different earlier Treks than I did.

@cn @amit @eli Yes, a world view where almost everyone has some sort of passing resemblance to Luke Skywalker and there's only room for one woman.
