Maybe your blog post doesn’t need that 2000-pixel header image jack.baty.net

@jack I wonder if there is a WordPress plugin to select a random huge image from a stock website and place it between title and the article

@jack Certainly when I was posting there you were very much encouraged to include an image to make your post "stand out” but if every post has one it loses the impact, especially as Medium is such a homogenous property.

@jack have you seen this piece? Not Every Article Needs A Picture. As someome who writes for a news org and has spent time trawling for stock images to go with stories, boooy did it resonate. The big issue is how stories without images look on social media, esp. Facebook

@akurjata I had not seen that, thanks! And right, if most articles appear with an image on social media then it suggests they all should. Hard to blame anyone for following along.

@jack the hardest part is there are numbers to back it up. I’ve seen, in realtime, pageviews go through the roof after swapping in a better image. In a way, not putting in an image is a way of saying “this is going to get less readers than it could” (this is in the world of news orgs, not indie blogs where I think a better strategy is to focus on loyalty)
