@herself @Miraz That’s a fascinating article! I love Latin names, but common names are so much more interesting because they tell you about the culture of people who have lived with those organisms for hundreds of years. In the UK, the most beloved/useful species tend to have the greatest number of different common names.

@Miraz @bsag it was interesting, wasn’t it! And gives a wonderful insight into the sense of humour of early Maori. (“Ghost poo”! “Squeaky Pounamu”!)

@herself And in fact, useful. On our local community blog I've started a (probably) daily quiz question: "He aha tērā? What is that?" So far it's been about birds, but yesterday I spotted some excellent tūtae kēhua — a name I hadn't known — and that will be up in the next couple of days, with info from the article.
