The reaction to Barbie is overshadowing what a success the 8 nominations are. And of the women nominated for best actress, who would you remove from the list to nominate Margot Robbie instead? These lists are so tough. For best director, though, there’s a strong case… I blogged as much last year.

@manton Greta Gerwig deserves a nomination. Barbie's success owes a lot to her. 😢 However, it's more disappointing for me to see Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse and Past Lives got snubbed. These films are my all-time favorites, not just for this year, and seeing them likely go empty-handed feels incredibly wrong.

@ningkantida Yeah, I've always had mixed feelings about the best animated category because it means an animated film will essentially never be nominated for best picture again. And they're usually overlooked in other categories too.

@manton It's truly disheartening for anyone who loves the industry to see animated films always being considered second class. This art form has the power to transcend physical reality, yet it is often treated as child's play. Spider-man Across The Spider Verse did everything right, as much as a great film could do, and yet it was recognized as merely 'a hero animation.' The movie got me right away in the first scene; it became one of my favorite opening scenes ever. And the fact that they didn't get nominated for anything that made all that possible really gutted my soul. Oppenheimer, on the other hand, received all the nominations, some didn’t even deserve as much as other candidates, just because it's Nolan's film.

@ningkantida Completely agree. I thought Oppenheimer was excellent, but the Spider-Verse films are something else. It took so much creativity and guts to make something that new. There hasn't been anything quite like it before.

@manton I saw Poor Things last night and understood why Robbie wasn't nominated - Emma Stone is doing the same performance, of someone naive navigating and soon outsmarting the world around them, but she is much more wickedly funny and masterful with it.

@chriswilsonXYZ Really looking forward to seeing that one. It's probably next on the list.

@manton the question for you then is whether Gosling deserves a nomination. Reading between the lines of what he said does question that.
