I need to come up with a one-line description of what I do in the U.S. to tell people in India. No one knows what ‘social science research’ is. Most of them expect to hear “work at Google/Apple/Microsoft”. Or maybe just throw complex terms around and they won’t ask more.

@pratik I didn’t know what it was either before looking it up just now. Can you say you study how people work?

@pratik 🤷🏽‍♂️ “ Use complex methods to monitor people and what they do, through observation and data collection” ……..Responses…..oh so you are a spy? Is this why I need an ad blocker? I bet you work at Facebook and collect all my data, can you tell me who un-friended me? Oh, do you watch cameras like a security guard ….??

I have worked in my industry for 20 years and my 9 year old understand what I do more than my wider family lol, and they are not even in India. They are in the UK.

@Munish I bet. My parents (well, now just my dad) still don’t. My dad still tells people I’m an architect (my undergraduate degree). @odd

Maybe I should make shit up and tell different things to different people including, I’m a gay pornstar 😝

@Munish When I read what Pratik wrote, I was actually thinking about a spy book, and I was sure it was David Ogilvy, the marketing guru who wrote it, but I couldn’t find it, so it might have been someone else who wrote it. Ian Fleming? I don’t know. @pratik

@pratik using @JohnPhilpin ‘s framing, how about “social architect”?! Defined as “the study of people, activity and place” and “conscious design of an environment that encourages a desired range of social behaviors ☺️

@AshP @Munish @JohnPhilpin No one listen to any other word after I say architect. In that case, I can be anything I want

@Munish I’m not sure. I think the book was about bugging houses and stake outs. 🕵🏻‍♂️

@pratik You are right! Architects are always talking about their vision for this space where people can mingle and collaborate blah blah blah. All people do is sit there and look at their phones while eating lunch.

@AshP I think 'social' architect has connotations that @pratik might not want to highlight.
