@JohnPhilpin FastMail is my email provider of choice. Great service, including great customer service. Web interface and iOS app are simple and functional. Works well with Mail.app. Price is reasonable.

Highly recommended.

@JohnPhilpin I can’t recommend Fastmail enough. Just renewed for another two years, I’ve been with them for a long time

Tried Proton, Tutanota, and a couple others, never saw a reason to leave Fastmail. Great service, complete feature set, your own domains or pick from a ton of their own. It’s the kind of provider I almost never think, it works.

@ohBananaJoe I can’t say if there was. My plan is a two-year plan, and it was time to pay. Not even sure if they do the Cyber Monday promotions, but I don’t remember seeing them announced.

@JohnPhilpin I recently moved away from Gmail to FastMail and have been very happy with my decision.

@JohnPhilpin Have been with Fastmail for a long time. Very happy with them. Solid service and apps. They also have standards based services that work with the stock iOS/macOS: calendar, contacts, notes and reminders apps.

@ohBananaJoe do you know what's the main selling point for Mailbox.org vs. ProtonMail or Tutanota? I consider switching away from Tutanota, because I’m not a webmail kind of user. Mailbox seems interesting but "trying out“ email services is a hassle…

@hutaffe I tried Tutanota using their Mac OS app and it wasn’t bad. They had some server issues a while back. I’ve also tried proton mail. I settled on runbox.com. They make the set up very easy and it has many of the security features of proton mail without the hype.

@JohnPhilpin In my opinion, Proton is rock solid. I've had an account there since their early days and so long as you follow good browser practices it's a secure, encrypted top notch option for encrypted web-based email.

@JohnPhilpin I have been happy with Hover mail for about 10 years, the same place my domains are hosted. I've also set up a number of web clients with Hover. No issues to report.

@ohBananaJoe Not sure what I need 😉 I want security and independence from the big companies. Tutanota is also from Germany. A separate client is a no go actually, I see that now with Tutanota which for technical reasons (that were solved by Protonmail) only has a web client which annoys me a little. Tutanota seems more flexible with payments, if I need more Domains for example... Will need to have a deeper look.

@docuguy I think Tutanota and especially ProtonMail are the only ones that are considered secure by the media. But there are certainly others. It's not easy to really compare them anymore. Tutanota's „app" is just a wrapper for ther website. I think it's not really usable if used more than once a day.

@hutaffe yep, email is a pretty “leaky” medium. My understanding of runbox is that if both parties are using it and encrypting you are good. It’s the “both parties” thing that is the snag. I couldn’t even get my accountant to use ProtonMail and he’d never heard of Tutanota and so didn’t trust it. Getting hung up in the webmail universe is a blocker for most casual users.

@ohBananaJoe all the „apps“ from Tutanota are just wrappers around their web UI. Terrible on the phone. I can use the website then, exactly the same. It’s not possible to use a standard client, even on the Mac. I think I‘ll try mailbox...

My thanks to you all. In the end for the one account I needed to sort now, and where security was important I elected to go with Proton. So far - so good.

I had never heard of Tutanota until now - but the limitations highlighted in here are enough to say no. The Proton ios app is great - albeit that there are a few enhancement requests that I need to throw over the transom ... and the fact it just works inside of Apple Mail is definitely a pro for my needs.

BUT, my partner has an email account that also needs some kind of love - so prolly going to take the FastMail route for her - I mean it seems that is THE choice and the complexity of the Proton install for her is not one I am going to take on (being tech suypport for the family and all that !)

That said @hawaiiboy - I too am using hover for all the new PeopleFirst domains I recently acquired - and they really are rather good aren’t they - BUT I just wanted my mail somewhere else.

Onwards.

Thankyou all again.
