@Denny Maybe SUV's have a different status in Europe? In the US they're very conventional, common, middle-class vehicles. That might be good or bad, but "disarming" them certainly wouldn't be seen as Sticking it to the Man.
@JMaxB @Denny I think the SUV in America is just the current iteration of the station wagon. More cargo space than a sedan.
@Pilchuck Thank you. I think we could grow a lot by valuing more what is local. How can I enjoy the foods available at the store at the intersection? How can I enjoy riding my bike at my local park instead of driving it across town to that other park? Does my child truly profit from her traveling football league or would she find as much joy in our community league? Could I serve and grow as effectively in the local, small church as the big megachurch across town? There are plenty of simple ways to replace travel with local.
@Denny I expect we’ll see more of this. Bruce Sterling and Chuck Palahniuk are some writers who explored the possibility of eco-terrorists or people who just wanted to strike back at those who caused the degradation of their climate and environment. Their fiction, grim as it is, is more enjoyable than reality.
@Pilchuck Rail-based transport, hydrogen ferries and feeder electric/hydrogen buses along with light transport as in manual and electric bikes seem to me to be the only way with current technology. I mean I’d love to have a big SUV for comfort and security, but not if it harms others now or in the future, (which it will). For the time being I mostly use my legs.
@KyleEssary This can only work in certain places. For example, most towns and places in Texas are very spread out. Making a car a need not a want. Where in place like Chicago and New York the car goes back to a want and not a need.
