This is nothing new but it’s crazy how many people I still see flat out texting while driving. Not like texting on a stop light but in motion. Thank god we are “educated” people.

@Gabz natural selection, perhaps? It’s incredibly illegal to drive and use your phone here in Australia, you get massive fine and lose a bunch of points from your license, generally it doesn’t stop people from doing it though. In NSW our police have just turned on cameras at traffic lights that can see if you’re using your phone then, which is also illegal.

@Gabz It is one of those laws which seems quite ineffective. I just don’t see it being enforced in general. Politicians feel good passing a law like this but without funding enforcement it’s not a priority against other policing needs.

@matpacker i have made a commitment of never touch my phone while driving. I even found this app that “gives you money” for every mile you drive without unlocking your phone. It’s more like fake money but it’s an incentive while I develop the habit.

@ronguest I remember reading a blog post, someone here local, how she saw this kid texting and driving and when she passed by, made him signs to put the phone down to which he “replied” by reving his car. A few miles down the road, this kid rear ended the lady.

@Gabz that’s an interesting idea for an app, it surprises me that insurers haven’t gotten on board, reduce your annual car insurance by using their app on your phone that detects when you unlock it and the speed you’re doing...

A few health insurers here have apps that pull in your activity levels and give you discounts on your premiums if you go above X steps per day.

@matpacker I believe our car-insurance does something like that, my wife was telling me about it, I just haven’t installed it.

@Gabz I’m a little dubious of the health insurance ones that do it, specially as they have all the access to your location data...I can’t imagine they’d ever use it against me 🧐

@ronguest additionally, at least here, the police I know won’t enforce it because they feel hypocritical. They have to drive while handling a full-blown laptop and other items.
