Does anyone still keep their own personal "portal" or "homepage"? Not quite a dashboard in the modern overloaded-with-"Business Intelligence"-widgets sense, but just... maybe a weather map, link to a playlist, link to the news, 2 links to social media... that sort of thing?

@rich\_text (because I am fiddling around, building yet another one. Excluding things like my.yahoo.com, this is probably the 8th or 10th? I've never really relied on one day-in/day-out, I just like building them.)

@rich\_text I don’t. They were huge for a period. Remember Lycos, Excite, etc.?

@rich\_text I'm thinking of doing the same thing. I've just discovered neocities and am thinking of building me a new simple website for my own enjoyment.

@rich\_text That’s a fantastic idea. I’ve gotten so used to checking the weather on my phone, I forgot that that was a thing.

@jamesvandyne Right! Between quick-glance phone apps, syncing browser-bookmarks, & better RSS tools, a lot of the utility of custom-portal pages is irrelevant (I guess?) But I still want something on a 2nd screen/background window -- could be as little as the weather & a webcam, I suppose… Still contemplating... Thanks for the replies, @canion @Eric\_US @felixp7

@rich\_text the things I keep coming back to: (1) the TVs at airports (hobbled by content that appeals to no one), (2) the way my dad (and zillions of others I’m sure) would leave the Weather Channel or a PGA tournament on a muted den TV all day, on the weekends, (3) (and this is the weird/abstract one) the sense of "connectedness” I had, walking around Cambridge, MA one afternoon while a Red Sox game was live. Duck into a deli, there's the game on the corner TV. 5 minutes later, walk past a pub with the game on 2 outdoor TVs. We were on a self-guided walking tour of the whole area, but the game was ever-present. I'm not a big sports-ster but that was neat.
