@jayeless I don't want to let that stuff into my brain… I have enough trouble when some story of abuse of animals or humans breaches my shields. Re animals and humans — I am SO immensely glad others will tackle those things, because they need to be dealt with. My capabilities lie in other areas.

@Miraz Oh, I'm 100% with you there! Any kind of real-life account of abuse, especially against animals or children, and I can't handle it. I could never be something like an RSPCA inspector either, even though I'm glad they exist. 😔

@jayeless @Miraz All abuse is horrible, especially children and animals. But nothing makes me go into “I can’t deal with this”-mode faster than abuse against dogs.

@hjertnes Yeah, not that it makes anything else less bad, but that's definitely something I find unbearable too 😔

@jayeless I am so glad Halloween marketing will be over in 24 hours. The small amount of advertising I see is all about screaming horror. As @Miraz says, I don’t need that in my brain.

@jayeless Good insight. I love horror movies because I enjoy being scared/creeped out/grossed out in small, safe doses. It's like a workout for my emotions! 🏋️ I can't abide 'true crime' stories though. I like my monsters 100% fake.

@jayeless I am always interested to hear about others likes/dislikes/tolerances of horror movies and such. I always have to tread carefully as certain things will stick in my head - and it doesn't have to be from the horror genre per se.

Cruelty in all its forms probably sums up what I can't deal with. So there are even things I read or saw years ago that I still can't unread or unsee.

On the other hand, I enjoy a good creepy story...

@Cheri in theory I like the idea of being scared in small doses - if only my imagination wasn't still running with it days later, ready to catch me out when I least expect it 😂

Interesting what you say about true crime. I feel very uncomfortable with the explosion of the genre. But I equally have to admit I have 'enjoyed' some true crime podcasts. Usually those which are highlighting a miscarriage of justice or similar. Or are genuinely seeking justice for someone.

If I get a sniff of exploitation or the all to common 'beautiful corpse' vibe, I steer well clear.

@jayeless I feel exactly the same. When I was a teenager I always gave in to peer pressure and watched horror movies with my friends. It would always be followed by a week of anxiety, nightmares or sleepless nights. Nowadays I simply think: I already suffer from anxiety, what's the point or the pleasure in inflicting more? I steer clear from TV during this season, to be honest.

@jayeless Also with you, never enjoyed them. There is so much to worry about already, and so many alternatives, there’s no way I’ll spend time with horror movies, shows, whatever. If I’m not enjoying myself, I’ll just stop. No matter who’s watching with me.

@jayeless there are something about how dogs are that makes it more dreadful for me to see them hurt or abused

@Cheri @strandlines I can enjoy "true crime" if the focus is more on highlighting corruption, or a botched investigation/miscarriage of justice, as well. If the focus is just on cruelty, then yeah, I find that super offputting too 😬 In fiction my tolerance level is a lot higher but I will still reach a point where I go, "No, this is just sick," and I'll be too repulsed to keep reading. It probably depends on the author's treatment of the topic, too.

@jean @Portufraise @maique Good to see I'm far from alone in not really liking the genre! There's definitely so much other good stuff to watch, no need to subject myself to horror 😛 I'll also be kinda relieved to see the back of the Halloween advertising.

@hjertnes Yeah, I know what you mean, and I feel much the same.
