HEY!

The best way I can describe it is “Gmail coming onto the scene in 2005, but not from Google this time.”

Probably doesn’t make sense, but thinking about email in 2005 makes the analogy fit if you remember the Gmail launch. Reinventing email, fancy tools for processing, etc.

@Burk I long resisted Gmail too. Now I have three email IDs on it. Sigh! But a lack of custom domains on Hey is a deal killer for me.

@Burk Interesting. I’ll think about it then. Also, in that case, no need to scramble to get your username. BTW Fastmail allows for multiple aliases, right?

@Burk @pratik yeah! With custom domains could be a real game changer. I just don't know how's Hey privacywise.

@paulopinto right now we are taking their word for it. But SvN has a good reputation so I’m inclined to believe them. @burk

@pratik Yep, Hey will be great for some. It don't curently have any email problems that this solves, but I always like to check stuff out, so I did. 😀 and for the multiple aliases in FM, yes it sure does.

@Burk ironically, all this Hey talk will finally make me get a paid subscription for Fastmail. I’ve been on the fence for a while 🙂

@pratik Like @Burk, my experience with Fastmail is totally positive. I've been using them for almost 5 years.

@Burk @pratik Same here. Been with them for years, no issues whatsoever. I don't even thing about it, unless it's time to create another alias, or add another domain to the service. It just works.

@Burk love there’s so many Fastmail users here. I’ve also been using it for years and recently added my domain to it. Its server side rules, tags are great.

@Burk my interest for HEY was the onboarding and the way it works. Fastmail User for a few years also and it just works for me... plus I don’t get that much email anyway so it makes no sense for me.

@Burk The only downside with Fastmail is that third party services don’t make integrations for it. Everything supports Gmail and O365 but not everything supports standard IMAP/JMAP.

@kurite @vincent love been using Fastmail for a few years with both my personal and business domains, and it’s great. I like Hey’s approach, but it’s very opinionated in different ways than I am.

@Burk @pratik Given the price of 2 and 3 letter Hey addresses, I suspect the custom domain price to be very expensive.

@Burk Oh I dunno, shouldn’t we all wait and sign up for @dave winer's new mail system hey.email

@JohnPhilpin Haha, yeah I’m sure he’ll be committed to that for a month or two before becoming bored by it!

@canion i think he’s so bored he hasn’t even started.

His bigger point was probably wait … a brand new email app hasn’t bought the email domain name … clearly nobody is thinking this through!

@mcg Wait, there’s already a black market?!

@pratik Probably, but I'm talking about what Hey charges. Two letter addresses are $999/yr and $349/yr for three.

@mcg What? Addresses are priced differently? How is that equitable?

@Burk (and others) here is my hey.com invite code in case someone wants to go through the onboarding experience and poke around a bit. Should be a couple live invites left via this code as of now: tqyko8c
