The perils of running a hackintosh: my machine seems to have choked mid-update. Now I can't boot the machine into safe or recovery modes. Trying a fresh install now, but that too seems to have gotten hung up 🤔

@JacksonOfTrades I just made a new Ubuntu USB stick. I'm thinking I may try to install Ubuntu on the machine -- erase all the things from Ubuntu and then start supah fresh.

@eli Do you use Carbon Copy Cloner or Superduper? Having a fresh clone to restore from after a borked update can be a lifesaver!

@Bruce I don’t actually, but I've been considering starting. I enable timemachine backups, but for the most part try to run my two computers (a 2015 MacBook Air and a homemade hackintosh-frankenmac) in a really vanilla config so I can start fresh really quickly. I've got a small bucket of bash scripts I run on a fresh install to restore my dev. setup, but for the most part my precious bits area easily restored from a combination of git, dropbox, and my own server. The only stuff I really care about are my photos, and those are backed up all over the place (across various services, self hosted solutions, multiple computers, and a heap of drives).

@eli Makes sense. But clones do give you an extra sense of security when you update or install something new. Especially if you use an external ssd (Samsung T5s are good), getting right back to where you were is a pretty quick. Much simpler than Time Machine as the external drive is a complete copy of your Mac.

Way back when I had my iBook G3's logic board fail. While it went home to Cali to get repaired, I borrowed a friend's Mac and kept working. Not much changed as I was still booting into my system with my apps.

@eli If you're using Ubuntu I recommend Xubuntu, which is my prefered "flavor." Very light and usable.

More people using Linux is always good! :D

@eli I second @Bruce advice. I find Time Capsule backups can be unreliable at times (I could write s book) or in certain situations, and it’s way faster to start from a clone than wait for TS restore. Initial clone takes a while, but subsequent updates can be pretty quick, especially if you keep them up periodically.

@JacksonOfTrades I was gonna just use Linux to reformat everything and then roll back to macOS...but Ubuntu is wicked nice. Think I’ll stick around for a bit! I was lookin at MATE, but Xubuntu looks nice, too. Can the *buntu flavors generally run the same packages as Ubuntu? Pretty much as long as I can run emacs, WebStorm, node, PHP, and a browser I ought to be all set.

@eli Yes most software that will run on Ubuntu will run on the flavors. I've had good luck with most Debian packages as well. This might help give you an overview: www.makeuseof.com/tag/ubunt... Enjoy.

@hjertnes @dgold @eli I've been using i3 when on Linux. I'd be interested in the benefits of awesome over i3, assuming there are some.

@eli for Linux I like the Vivaldi vivaldi.com browser. Or if you prefer minimalist Firefox is good too. You should have no shortage of free software from the Ubuntu depository.

Some people coming from macOS like Elementary Linux which has a more Mac-like UI, but I've never tried it. You can't go wrong with Ubuntu, it is a mature stable, user freindly product.
